Man kills his brother in NW Houston home

Click2Houston: A man fatally shot his 71-year-old brother-in-law at a northwest Houston home on Wednesday, investigators said.
Houston police said the shooting happened in the 5700 block of Saxon near the Northwest Freeway about 2:20 p.m.
The man police said admitted to shooting and killing his brother-in-law Wednesday afternoon has been released from police custody and for the time being, won't face any charges. Bruce Devine was briefly detained by Houston Police after he called them saying he had shot someone in self-defense.
"He threatened me," Devine said. "He was coming at me. He was going to hurt me. If he didn't kill me, he was gonna hurt me real bad."
When police arrived at the home on the 5700 block of Saxon Dr. in Northwest Houston at around 2:20 p.m., they found the 71-year-old victim inside a bedroom dead from a single 9 mm gunshot wound to the chest.
The alleged shooter, Devine, and his wife were both inside the house at the time of the shooting police said. The victim had recently moved in with the couple.
"(The victim) had just been released from a long prison term in March and was staying with the family here,"  Houston Police Detective Bart Oxspring said.
Devine said that he has no regrets about shooting his wife's brother but he does feel bad for her.
"I'm sorry to say that my wife's relationship probably won't be the same because she loved her brother and I took his life," Devine said.
The District Attorney's Office has declined to file charges against Devine for now.  However, they add that a grand jury will now ultimately decide if Devine will face any criminal charges.

4th person shot in NW Houston apartment rampage

THE CHRON: Authorities said Thursday that a fourth person was shot in a rampage the day before at a northwest Houston apartment complex, an incident that triggered a series of events that ended when the suspected gunman died after a car crash.
The dead man was identified Thursday as Patrick Oneal Spurlock, 39. Why he opened fire about 8:50 a.m. at the Wilshire Place condominiums, 6000 Hollister, has not been determined.
Spurlock was a tenant at the complex but had been asked to leave by a security guard, police said. Spurlock pulled a gun and shot the guard and others. The fourth victim, officials said, was driving in the parking lot when he was wounded. He was flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.
Spurlock then ran into the median of Hollister, officials said, and shot at an officer in his squad car.
The officer returned fire but neither was hit, officials said.
Spurlock carjacked a woman outside another apartment complex on Hollister. He then drove off in her Chevrolet TrailBlazer, with police pursuing. During the chase, he stopped the SUV more than once, reversed into patrol cars following him and exchanged gunfire with the officers.
In the U-turn lane of the Northwest Freeway feeder road near Tidwell, he reversed into pursuing police cars before heading east on the inbound service road. The chase ended when he slammed into cars stopped at a traffic light at Hollister.
The chain-reaction crash sent five people to area hospitals. At least one has been released.
No officers were injured in the rolling gunbattle.
Spurlock died on the frontage road. His cause of death had not been determined.

Thief eludes police

HOUSTON—Houston police are searching for a theft suspect who escaped capture after leading police on a chase before crashing in northwest Houston early Monday.
An HPD unit attempted to pull over the suspect on 34th near TC Jester shortly after 1 a.m., but he refused to stop.
The suspect sped through the Casa Nube apartments and came upon a wooden and chain link fence bordering Spring Hill apartments, but that did not stop him.
Police said the suspect smashed through the fence, hit a dumpster, then smashed through another fence before crashing. Two vehicles in the apartments were damaged after the suspect crashed. An SUV in the parking lot was damaged by the first fence and a car was hit by the dumpster.
The suspect then hopped out, fled on foot and remains at large.

Boy 12 took parents car hits woman.

HOUSTON -
A 12-year-old child who took his parents' car without their permission hit a woman in northwest Houston Saturday, Houston police said.
Police said the boy took his parents' GMC when they wouldn't take him to the store. The boy ended up hitting Elia Ortiz, 32, while she was in her backyard, according to police.
The black GMC broke through the fence around 1 p.m. on Garsee Drive near the Woodland Oaks subdivision of northwest Houston.
Ortiz's neighbor, Alice Capistran was in her driveway when she heard the crash.
"I started running to see what's happened, and seeing my neighbor laying down on the floor so I went to tell her everything was going to be okay and we called 911," she said.
Ortiz's husband said his wife was transported to Northwest Memorial Hermann Hospital with a fractured back and sprained leg. She was home Saturday night, heavily medicated and in a lot of pain.
Neighbors said once the crash was over, the boy was crying and asking in Spanish for forgiveness, saying the whole thing was an accident.
HPD says the boy will not be charged and the case is being sent to juvenile court.

Houston pig wins right to not be classified as bacon!

This little piggy can stay at home.
Wilbur, a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig that a Spring homeowner's association wanted to kick out of a family's home, doesn't have to move, a Harris County district court judge ruled Monday.
The Sardo family's one-and-a-half-year-old pig has been the subject of a lawsuit filed by his family to declare him a "household pet" so he can continue living in their subdivision. The Thicket at Cypresswood Community Improvement Association argued the pig violates its rules which forbids pets that are not "common" and "traditional."
District court Judge Mike Engelhart ruled evidence is clear that this pig breed is considered a household pet and that they are not used for commercial purposes. He also said the dispute puts a spotlight on homeowner's associations' restrictions and residents' property rights.
